Designer Vineyards

I enjoyed my visits to vineyards in the Hunter Valley and Marlborough when we visited Oz and NZ a couple of years back. The “boutique” vineyards were all really nice and welcoming but I found the “majors” (McGuigan and, shock horror, Cloudy Bay) were very impersonal and a bit of a disappointment. Just because you’re a large wine behemoth doesn’t mean your “cellar door” needs to be impersonal. Some vineyards are really putting some thought into their design…

To the relief of many, a visit to a winery no longer has to resemble an agricultural outing with the mandatory trudging along dirt paths and in dark cellars listening to winegrowers go on and on about the terroir of their cru.
